Nassiri new

Md. Sp. coach

Jamshed Nassiri on Wednesday was appointed new Mohammedan Sporting coach after the club decided to release Shankar Moitra.

Confirming this, a senior club official said that Moitra was finding it difficult to continue with the job because of his preoccupation with current employers. “P.K. Banerjee (club’s technical adviser) was also taken into confidence about Nassiri’s appointment”, he added.

Nassiri will take charge from Thursday.

Goalless tie

Birbhum and Murshidabad played out a goalless tie in the Konark Sheet state football league in Bolepur on Wednesday.

In the inter-school meet for the Bankim Cup, Tiljala High School edged past Mitra Institution 1-0 while Cossipore Institution beat Entally Academy 3-2.

Equestrian meet

Varun Todi won the confined dressage event in the Williamson Tea Eastern India equestrian championship (2003) which concluded at the Tollygunge Club on Wednesday. Most of the final day’s events were, however, cancelled owning to the inclement weather.

WINNERS: Children-I dressage: Raunak Banerjee; Confined dressage: Varun Todi; Children-I show jumping: Mrinalika Bhanjdeo; Sub-junior dressage, confined jumping and confined riding: Biren Dey; Open hacks (lightweight) and Ladies’ hacks: Kanika Advani and Junior Dressage and open hacks (heavyweight): Debika Mukherjee.

Bowling meet

Pradeep Arora defeated Sintu Chowdhury 221-144 and Kamal Verma 185-141 en route to his semi-final berth in the Calcutta bowling meet at Nicco Super Bowl on Wednesday. Santanu Saha accounted for Asraf Kamal 191-123 to make the last-four stage despite a 123-145 loss to Rahul Bhatter in another match. Vineet Khemka reached semi-finals in losers’ plate.

Sports carnival

The inter-city club sports carnival will be held here from February 27 to 29. As many as 24 clubs, including nine from the city, will participate in the meet. Six games — cricket, bridge, golf, snooker, squash and tennis — will be part of the carnival.
