Baton for brew belt protesters

Siliguri, Dec. 10: The SUCI and the Tea Plantation Employees’ Union today lined up, among others, the daughters of garden workers, who shouted slogans demanding the reopening of closed gardens.

But police had to lathicharge when the union supporters tried to storm the Siiliguri court compound. Nine people, six of them policemen, were injured.

The SUCI said later 10-year-old Sona Sarkar who came from Cooch Behar’s Haldibari with her mother, a tea garden worker, was missing.

The protesters, mostly garden workers from Dooars and the Terai, turned violent when they were prevented from barging into the premises that houses the Siliguri subdivisional judicial magistrate’s court and the office of the subdivisional officer. Twenty-six people were arrested.

South Point fire

Panic spread at South Point School this morning as a fire broke out on the top floor but it was doused even before the fire tenders arrived. The authorities said the fire started from a room where broken furniture were dumped.
