Dalgaon probe demand

Calcutta, Dec. 8: The Congress today demanded a judicial inquiry into the massacre of 19 people at Dalgaon tea estate in Jalpaiguri on November 19.

Congress and Trinamul Congress members walked out of the Assembly as chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee was replying to the calling attention motion by five MLAs, including Tapan Hore of the RSP and Abu Ayesh Mondol of the CPM.

Medical college

Calcutta: Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee informed the Assembly on Monday that the Medical Council of India had turned down the state’s proposal of setting up two new medical colleges in the state — in Midnapore and at SSKM hospital.

Trains delayed

Calcutta: Several long-distance trains, including the Mumbai Mail and the Hatia Express, were held up on Monday morning for about two hours after a crack in the track was detected in the Howrah yard at 6.40 am.

Merger call

Calcutta: The Paschim Banga Police Association has demanded the immediate merger of the West Bengal and Calcutta police. “Nowhere in the country do we have two police administrations in a single state,” said association general secretary Bimal Biswas.
