Jewellery shop burgled

Burglars broke open the shutters of a jewellery shop on Central Garden Reach Road in the Watgunge police station area on Saturday morning and made off with jewellery worth around Rs 15 lakh. reliminary investigations revealed that a gas lighter was used to bore into the metal shutters. “The hole was large enough for a man to pass through. According to the owner, all gold and gold-plated ornaments were stolen,” said an officer of Watgunge police station. Police hinted at the role of an insider in the robbery. The burglary wing of the detective department has been informed of the incident.

Twin fires

A house on Prince Anwar Shah Road caught fire on Saturday and five fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames. Another fire broke out on Topsia Road where some tyres had been dumped. Firemen doused the flames in half an hour.

CM mother ill

Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee’s mother, Leela Bhattacharjee, 78, was admitted to Woodburn ward of SSKM Hospital on Saturday afternoon. Doctors said she was suffering from a respiratory problem. She was in a stable condition till reports last came in.
