Birthday date for Badal bail plea

Chandigarh/New Delhi, Dec. 5: Parkash Singh Badal will have to spend his birthday, December 8, in jail with the Supreme Court deciding to hear the pleas of the former Punjab chief minister and his son that day.

Special judge S.K. Goyal today adjourned till December 9 hearings of bail pleas filed in a Ropar court by Badal and his son, Sukhbir Singh, who are lodged in a Punjab jail in a disproportionate assets case.

The judge observed that the Badals had filed an application in the Supreme Court seeking bail and transfer of the case outside Punjab. As the apex court was slated to hear the applications on Monday, the trial court could not proceed in the matter until then. The Badals’ application in the Supreme Court alleged that chief minister Amarinder Singh was “personally” targeting them for “political reasons”.

Earlier, the vigilance bureau had contested the bail petition in the special court. The bureau filed an application saying that the former chief minister and his son had applied for bail in the apex court. It also argued that investigations would be hampered if the Badals were granted bail.

Haryana chief minister Om Prakash Chautala and Shiromani Gurdwara Prabandhak Committee president Gurcharan Singh Tohra met Badal in jail today for half-an-hour.
