Soumyajeet bags title

Kochi: Top seed Soumyajeet Sarkar lived up to expectations and won the boys’ singles crown while J. Swarna of Tamil Nadu won the girls’ singles title in the LIC 65th junior national championships, which concluded here on Tuesday.

In an exciting encounter, Soymyajeet of Centre of Excellence (CoE) had to sweat it out in overcoming seventh seed Zubin Kumar of PSPB-A 6-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 11-7 and 11-5 in the final.

In the girls’ title-decider, fourth seed Swarna beat seventh seeded and her statemate K. Shamini 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 11-8, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7.

In the girls’ doubles, Anushree Saha and Pallabi Kundu of CoE accounted for Madhurika Patkar and Prajakta of Maharashtra 12-10, 9-11, 18-16, 8-11, 11-8.

Saumyajeet beat Bengal’s Niloy Basak 11-7, 11-9, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7 in the semi-final while Zubin got the better of fourth seed R. Abishek of Tamil Nadu 10-12, 8-11, 11-6, 14-12, 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, to set up the title-clash.
