In-laws held after suicide note charge

Behrampore, Dec. 2: The husband and in-laws of Susmita Mahato, a 20-year-old housewife who allegedly committed suicide last evening, was arrested after her mother gave police a note where she said she was driven to death.

Police said the husband, Rakesh Mahato, his elder brother Rajesh and mother were picked up on the basis of the complaint lodged by Susmita’s mother.

The suicide note was tucked in her sari. “It is becoming unbearable for me to survive. My husband and in-laws are beating me up regularly,” she wrote.

Jayanti Mandal, her mother, alleged that they had given Rs 1 lakh to the Mahatos as dowry. “Later, we gave them Rs 50,000 and a motorcycle. Recently, they were asking for more money, which we could not give,” she said.

Susmita’s father Susanta Mandal is in the army and now posted in Uttar Pradesh.
