AIDS fightback

Calcutta, Nov. 30: The occasion is World AIDS Day, the mission is awareness — with a difference.

A programme organised by a charitable organisation at Gana Bhavan, Dorji Para Park, tomorrow will allow the sex workers of Sonagachhi, Calcutta’s biggest red-light area, to make the world aware of their misfortune while they learn about the disease and its prevention.

“Apart from the usual speeches on AIDS and its prevention, which is very important, the sex workers will perform and some of them will tell their life stories to people,” said Sekhar Chattopadhyay, the general secretary of SB Devi Charity Home, which is organising the programme.
