64 entries for Bankim Cup

Calcutta: Sixty-four teams from in and around the city will vie for the Bankim Cup in the Milo inter-school football team, which has been revived after eight years. Announcing this at a press conference on Thursday, IFA secretary Subrata Dutta said the teams will be divided into 16 groups and winners from each group will advance to the pre-quarter finals.

The tournament, which will kick off on Monday, will be finished within February 15 and carries Rs 30,000 for the champions and Rs. 20,000 for the runners-up.

Dutta added they are planning to hold the matches at Rabindra Sarobar Stadium from pre-quarter final stages in view of telecast facilities.

State gymnastics

The 54th state gymnastics championships will be held in Shyamnagar from December 3 to 7. More than 400 gymnasts are expected to take part in various events which include artistic, rhythmic, sports aerobics and aerobatics gymnastics.

The state teams for sub-junior, junior and senior nationals will be selected on the basis of performance in the meet.

Ritwick up

Top seed Ritwick Bhattacharya of New Delhi beat Bengalís Gautam Das 9-1, 9-0, 9-4 to move into the fourth round of menís section in the national squash championship at Calcutta Racket Club on Thursday.

Second seed Saurav Ghosal of Tamil Nadu also whipped another Bengal player, Nikhil Khemka 9-0, 9-2, 9-0 in Round III.
