Sensex tests 5000 again

Mumbai, Nov. 27 (PTI) Stocks rallied sharply today and helped the sensex extend its gains to the second consecutive session with a 94 point rise on the Bombay Stock Exchange on hectic buying by operators coupled with shortcovering by retail investors.

The BSE benchmark 30-share index opened higher at 4907.38 and gradually moved upwards to the day's high of 5000.41 before closing at 4989.04 against Tuesday’s close of 4894.59, a net gain of 94.45 points or 1.93 per cent.

Retail investors reportedly covered short positions at the concluding day of November contract in futures and options, market sources said.

The broad-based bse-100 index spurted 37.41 points to 2562.28 from previous close of 2524.87.
