EB to miss Mondal in 1st tie

East Bengal will be without Dipak Mondal in their opening National Football League (NFL) match against Salgaocar on Sunday. The central defender has not fully recovered from his leg injury, it was learnt. M. Suresh, who hasnít yet returned from Chennai, also looks a doubtful starter. However, Douglas da Silva is fully fit and will be available from the first match itself.

10-wkt win for Bengal

The Bengal under-15 boys notched up a 10-wicket win against Orissa in their Polly Umrigar Trophy match on Monday. Following on 168 runs behind, Orissa were bowled out for 217 in their second innings with Chandan Pal taking four for 77. Bengal knocked off the required 49 runs, thus ensuring five points (including a bonus).


Bengal 396 & 49/0. Orissa 228 & 217 (Sandeep Nulia 41; Chandan Pal 4/77, Soumya Pakre 3/52). Bengal won by 10 wkts.

Inter-state squash meet

Bengal had a mixed day in the inter-state squash championships on Tuesday. After losing 0-5 to Delhi, they downed Chandigarh 4-1 in pool A engagements.

In pool B, Bengal B were thrashed by Tamil Nadu 0-5 and then went down to Rajasthan 2-3.


Pool A: Services bt Chandigarh 4-1; Delhi bt Services 4-1. Pool B: Rajasthan lost to Maharashtra 1-4.

E. Rly in finals

Eastern Railway made the menís and womenís finals of the XXIII senior state basketball championships on Monday. The Eastern Railway women whipped Chhatra Samity 94-26, while the men edged out the Boysí Training Association 59-49.

The menís team will meet CPT who overcame Rakhi Sangha 71-67, the women will clash with Rakhi Sangha who ousted BBYS 46-26.

Shanker tops

IM Shanker Roy won the third all-Bengal rapid chess tournament organised by the AMRA Club in Barrackpore. Shanker topped with eight points, while Joydeep Saha finished second with 7.5.
