Woman succumbs to burns

Arati Das, 45, succumbed to her injuries on Sunday afternoon at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, two days after she was admitted with burns. Das, a resident of Prananath Chowdhury Lane, was seriously injured on Friday when a stove burst while she was cooking, police said.

Body found on expressway

An unidentified body was found on Kalyani Expressway on Sunday morning. Police said the body bore multiple injury marks.

Goon held

City police arrested Subhankar Dalui, alias Piklu, in the Muchipara police station area on Sunday.

Video piracy raids

Two persons were held and pirated video and audio cassettes and CDs worth Rs 2.5 lakh were seized from Eliot Road and Chandni Chowk on Saturday.

Gunny bag scare

Panic gripped residents of Entally on Sunday when they noticed a blood-stained gunny bag lying on Pottery Math, which later yielded the carcass of a dog.

Demonstration

Residents of Behala held a demonstration at the CSTC bus terminus on Sunday against an unauthorised private hotel on the premises.

Major dies

Major Samarendra Nath (Bruno) Banerjee, 81, died in Calcutta on Sunday. Father of actor Victor Banerjee, he represented Bengal in hockey, was a first-division football player and a national selector. He served as ADC to Governor Katju in Raj Bhavan and was president of the Planters Society of Eastern India. He was also engaged in several philanthropic efforts in Assam.
