Bhaichung joins practice

National Football League (NFL) champions East Bengal on Friday started practice with Fevernova balls with which the eighth edition of the premier tournament will be played this season. All players, including Bhaichung Bhutia and Mike Okoro, were present in the practice session. Bhaichung even scored a goal in a practice match. Later coach Subhas Bhowmick said he’s happy with the fact that the Fevernova ball will be used in the NFL. “It’s used everywhere in the world. It’s good to see it’ll be used here also,” he told reporters. The coach, however, refused to comment on the club officials’ sitting with senior players like Bhaichung and Okoro.

Top seed upset

Fifth seed Dharmaveer Biswakarma on Friday knocked out top seed Karan Dhillon and moved into the boys’ under-18 semi-finals of the Milo-AITA talent series being held at South Club. Dharamveer won the match 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the boys’ under-14 category, seed No. 1 Ranjan Prasad, however, made it to the last four, beating Bhanu Prakash 6-2, 6-4 in quarter finals.

Para cricket

Twenty-four teams will be seen in action in the Bagpiper para cricket championship, beginning Saturday. The teams have been divided into three zones. The zonal winners will then clash each other in a round robin league with the top two teams to play the title-clash.

Best athletes

The Athletic Coaches Association of Bengal will felicitate Harishankar Roy and Saraswati Saha as best athletes on Sunday. Kuntal Roy will also be honoured as best coach.

Walk for sports

The Walk for Sports, in the South Calcutta Sports Development Council-organised Khelar Mela at the Rabindra Sarovar Stadium, will be held on Saturday afternoon from Nazrul Manch.
