Mundy shoots into lead

Calcutta:Defending champion Uttam Singh Mundy Friday matched his own course record of seven under 65 for a fine start in the the Rs 10 lakh Surya Nepal Masters over the Gokarna Forest Golf Resort course.

According to information received here, Mundy enjoyed a two-stroke advantage over veteran Shiv Prakash, while 2001 champion Mukesh Kumar, Gaurav Ghei and Rafiq Ali were tied third at four-under 68.

Shiv Prakash proved he is still a force to reckon with despite being on the wrong side of forty. The Kanpur pro, whose last victory on the Hero slotted in six birdies and a three-putt bogey on the 17th hole for his 67.

In Miyazaki, Japan, Sergio Garcia of Spain produced a sparkling six-under-par 65 to take sole lead after the second round of the Dunlop Phoenix tournament Friday, while India’s Jyoti Randhawa was at joint 11th on a total of three-under 139.

Title for Parnita

Meanwhile in New Delhi, Parnita Garewal came from three strokes behind defending champion Anjali Chopra to battle her way to victory on the final day of the 36th ladies’ Northern India golf championship here Friday.

Parnita won with a 79 to Anjali’s 83. Vaishvi Sinha finished third, carding 82.
