Raman, Poulami move up

Top seeds S Raman and Poulami Ghatak moved into the second round of the Servo national ranking table tennis championships (East Zone) on Thursday.

Raman came back strongly after dropping the first game to beat Bengal’s Sourav Sengupta 7-11, 11-8 and 11-9 while Poulami breezed past Leena Madhekar 11-5, 11-9, 11-5 and 11-3 in the opening round.

Junior tennis

Two seeds were knocked out of the MILO-AITA Talent Series meet on Thursday. Unseeded Manish Rao of Karnataka ousted sixth seed Bibaswan Deb 6-1, 6-4 in the boys' under-18 event, while Akshay Ashok scalped No. 8 Ranjan Prasad 6-3, 6-2. Amrita Mukherjee, Dipti Srivastav, Danielle Jones and Mohana Sarkar entered the girls' under-14 semis. All four top seeds in girls' under-18 - Micah Muhury, Devanshi Rajgharia, Rohini Das and Dipti Srivastav - made the last four.

Charity function

State sports minister Subhas Chakraborty and some top Bengal footballers will give away medicines to the underprivileged in a programme at the Sarala Memorial Hall on Saturday on behalf of the Mallick Samaj Bikas Samity. “We’ll also help underprivileged students,” president of the Mallick Samaj Vikas Samity, Shyam Mallick said.
