Border deaths

Behrampore/Suri, Nov. 19: Two villagers were shot dead by the Border Security Force at Lalgola in Murshidabad last night while they were allegedly trying to smuggle some cattle to Bangladesh, reports our bureau.

One of the dead was identified as Rafique Ali, 25, from Bangladesh.

“Those killed were trying to smuggle sugar and some cattle through Ramnagar border outpost a little past midnight. The jawans had to open fire when they were attacked,” a BSF officer said.

Gyanwant Singh, district police superintendent said that the Bnagladeshi who was killed might be a resident of Godgari area of Nawabgunge district of Bangladesh.

In another incident at Suri in Birbhum, the police held eight Bangladeshis as part of their routine raid in various parts of the district. Those arrested, according to police, failed to show their visa or passport, police said. Some Bangladeshi currency worth Rs 50,000 was also recovered from them.

DSP DIB Dibendu Bhattacharya informed that they would be produced before the court tomorrow. “And if court asks us to push them back, we’ll follow the court’s order as per procedure,” he added.
