Counsel session for million-rupee seats
The state government on Sunday conducted a counselling session for the 200 additional medical seats, of which 150 are reserved for those willing to pay an enhanced fee, for this year’s MBBS course in SSKM and Midnapore medical colleges. The other 50 seats will go to Scheduled Castes candidates. The counselling started at 10 am and continued till late in the afternoon.
Methane found in well water
Residents of Barasat’s Bergum area panicked on Sunday when they saw bubbles rise in the water of a tubewell. The water caught fire when one of them struck a match. A geologist said the gas was methane.
Multiplex
Vice-president Bhairon Singh Shekhawat and governor Viren J. Shah will inaugurate the Bharatiyam multiplex of the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre on November 19 in Salt Lake. Chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee will attend.
Silver sandals
A 40-year-old woman was arrested on Saturday in Kaldanga Lane, in Salkia, for trying to steal the silver sandals of a temple deity. Krishna Dhara confessed to having stolen a similar pair of sandals from the same temple some time ago.
Jewellery park
Manikanchan jewellery park in Salt Lake’s Sector V will be inaugurated by chief minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee on November 18. Union minister Arun Jaitley will attend.
Bus turns turtle
Twenty persons were injured on Saturday when a private bus overturned at Garbhabanipur, in Howrah’s Udaynarayanpur. Fifteen of the injured were treated at a local private hospital and discharged.
