I-card drive set to start

Calcutta, Nov. 14: The state home department today said the pilot project to provide multi-purpose national identity cards will be kicked off tomorrow.

The first phase, which will continue till December 8, will involve house-to-house enumeration in the Jalangi block of Murshidabad and areas under Murshidabad municipality.

The Centre and the states had agreed to jointly take up the national I-card project at a chief ministers’ conference on internal security in Delhi this year.

The scheme would be implemented first in Jammu and Kashmir, Uttaranchal, Delhi, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Tripura, Assam, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Pondicherry and Bengal.
