Police identified the dead as Jaba Singh, a supporter of the Jharkhand Party. The clash took place at Kuchlapahari village in Belpahari of West Midnapore, about 180 km from Calcutta. Singh was a resident of nearby Murasai village. Land was distributed among the Mahali community, comprising tribals mostly owing allegiance to the CPM, last year. Trouble broke out when Jharkhand Party members came to harvest it this morning.
