Bribe bid comes a cropper

Tamluk (East Midnapore), Oct. 23: Four persons were arrested today while trying to bribe zilla parishad sabhadhipati Niranjan Shi.

Kamal Poddar, Manis Mistri, Sanjit Biswas and Sanjoy Sau offered Shi Rs 1 lakh to bag a contract for a central scheme. Police said Shi was being pestered by Poddar for the project. He informed the police and a trap was laid. Policemen in plainclothes were waiting in his office today.

Idols stolen

Bolpur (Birbhum): Idols made of kashtipathar and ashtadhatu, believed to be about 400 years old, were stolen from a temple at Chitalgram in Nalhati, 240 km from Calcutta, on Wednesday night. Police said they were worth Rs 16 lakh.

Murder arrests

Chapra (Nadia): Police on Thursday claimed a breakthrough in the triple murder case that rocked the district three days ago. Sarkat Sheikh, Ajibur Sheikh, Nangtai Sheikh and Zulu Sheikh were arrested and they reportedly confessed to being part of a gang that killed three women of a family at a village here, about 110 km from Calcutta.

Township trip

Calcutta: A team from Salim Group, the Indonesian conglomerate looking at investment prospects here, visited the site of a proposed township at Dankuni in Hooghly on Thursday.
