Mayor okays English in civic schools

Mayor Subrata Mukherjee agreed to introduce English in Corporation-run primary schools in response to a deputation by the students’ bloc of the SUCI on Wednesday. Representatives of the students’ bloc told the mayor that civic primary schools were not run by the state government. Hence English could be taught there, especially since even the state government had agreed in principle to reintroduce English at the primary level.

Murder over illicit affair

A 45-year-old chicken-feed seller, Jamshed Ali Sheikh, was murdered on Wednesday morning at Garfa in the Kasba police station area on the southern fringes of the city by a fellow shopkeeper, Jayanta Roy. According to R.K. Singh, additional superintendent of police, industrial, Roy was having an affair with Sheikh’s wife. The two shopkeepers often fought over the issue. “This morning, after they arrived at the place near Garfa market where they used to sell their merchandise they started bickering again. During the quarrel, Roy stabbed Sheikh several times in the stomach. The victim was rushed to a local clinic where he succumbed to his injuries. Roy fled the spot but was later arrested,” Singh said.

Run over

Sunit Kumar Adak, 21, was killed on Wednesday morning on BT Road in the Cossipore police station area when he was hit from behind by a bus on route 78. According to police sources, Adak, a resident of Telenipara in the Titagarh police station area, on the northern fringes of the city, was crossing the road in front of Rabindra Bharati University when the Shyambazar-bound bus hit him. He was rushed to RG Kar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries later in the day. The driver was arrested and the bus impounded.

Binod aide held

The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) picked up an accomplice of Sheikh Binod, the criminal who had escaped from Dum Dum central jail, on Wednesday night in a club in Behala. For several days, the CID has been conducting raids on many places on the southern fringes of the city as officials believe that Binod is hiding there.

Marga foundation

The thirteenth death anniversary of Prabhat Ranjan Sarkar (Anandamurtiji), the founder of Ananda Marga Pracharak Sangha, was observed on Tuesday at the Tiljala headquarters. A large number of devotees paid homage to him. Cultural programmes were held to mark the occasion.

Boy electrocuted

A 13-year-old boy, Tapas Sardar, was killed and several others were injured on Tuesday night when lightning struck a Kali puja pandal in Barasat on the northern fringes of the city. Police said as it was raining, people had taken shelter in the pandal.
