Mobile firms await big leap

Calcutta, Oct. 20: Major handset manufacturers are likely to consider setting up production units in the country when the cellular phone market reaches an annual figure of 25-million units.

The Indian Cellular Association (ICA) expects the market size to be around Rs 4,050 crore. Of this, mobiles sold through official channels will account for a mere Rs 1,822.50 crore.

On an average 5 lakh handsets are sold every month through official channels. This year, the handset market is expected to be around 9 million units as against 4.4 million units sold last year.
