Cop faces residents’ wrath

Barasat, Oct. 16: Trinamul Congress supporters and residents heckled North 24-Parganas superintendent of police Basudeb Bag when he went to investigate Monday’s death of party activist Prakash Tarafdar.

The protestors demanded the immediate arrest of the persons named in the FIR. They alleged that prime accused Bidhan Sarkar, a criminal who reportedly has the support of a section of the CPM, is moving about freely. They even offered to show Bag the accused’s hideout.

Residents of the area said the villagers who had gheraoed Bag at Jhowdanga in Gaighata, 80 km from Calcutta, became agitated when the official refused to arrest Sarkar immediately. A scuffle ensued when they tried to pull Bag out of his jeep.
