Tubewells poisoned

Krishnagar (Nadia), Oct. 15: Two youths were arrested after four children fell ill on drinking water from a tubewell in Asanagar that was allegedly contaminated by the duo unhappy over not receiving Kali puja subscription.

“We have arrested Surjya Karmakar and Sambhu Biswas of the seven youths named in the FIR against contamination lodged by residents,” said P.K. Ghosh, Nadia additional superintendent of police.

The police suspect the youths put pesticides in at least 12 tubewells in Asanagar, about 95 km from Calcutta.

Ghosh said the police have collected samples of the water and sent it for examination. “The administration has taken strong exception to the youths contaminating water of the tubewells for simply not getting subscription,” he said.
