New Delhi: India had a good day in the second leg of the ITF under-18 tennis tournament in Islamabad on Tuesday.
In the boys’ section, Rupesh Roy, Sumit Gupta, Vivek Shokeen and Lalit Mann qualified for the quarter finals, after beating their Pakistani opponents. Among the girls, Shweta Kakhandi and Daksha Muley stormed into the semi-finals.
Other boys who entered the quarters were Nashendiran Sivendiran (Sri Lanka), Shahzad Khan, Wasif Cheema and Pasha Mutib (all from Pakistan).
Roy defeated Yahya Numan 6-1, 6-0 while Gupta beat Adnan Khan 6-4, 6-4.
Mann, who upset sixth seed and compatriot Sandeep Kumar 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 in the first round on Monday, beat Tanveer Ashiq 6-3, 6-3. Shoukeen beat Sharukh Niazi 6-0, 7-5.
Kaushik Das was the lone Indian to lose — 6-0, 6-1 — to Cheema.
In the girls’ section, Kakhandi beat compatriot Poojashree Venkatesh 6-3, 6-2 and Mulay trounced Saba Aziz of Pakistan 6-2, 6-0.
In the boys’ doubles, Mann and Kumar defeated Haris Iltifat and Ejaz Ahmed 6-0, 6-1 while Das and Thailand’s Peerakit Siributwong beat Pakistan’s Niazi and Ashiq.
