In Nadia, Kartick Mondal, 30, and Dinesh Mondal, 20, both farmers, were struck on way home from their field in Tehatta.

A fellow farmer said it was overcast since morning. “They were returning home even as streaks of lightning criss-crossed the horizon. I saw them collapse. They were burnt all over.” Dinesh and Kartick were declared dead at the local health centre.

Additional district magistrate R.K. Biswas said their families will get a one-time grant of Rs 20,000 each, food and clothes.
