Lee upsets top seed

Tumkur: Unseeded Briton Lee Childs pulled off a major upset when he stunned top seed Michal Mertinak of Slovakia 6-4, 6-2 to sail into the quarter finals of the $25,000 ATP Challenger series here on Thursday.

The day virtually belonged to unseeded players as at least four seeds, including Michal, made their exits. Another Briton, Lee Martin, beat sixth seed Marcello Craca of Germany 6-2, 6-7 (10-8), 7-6 (7-5) in three hours.

Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany beat third seed Rik de Voest of South Africa 6-4, 7-5 while Stephane of Switzerland outplayed seventh seed Austrian Oliver Marach 6-2, 6-0.

The lone seeded player to win was fifth seed Michal Tabara of the Czech Republic.

The Indian challenge in singles ended with Harsh Mankad losing to Cypriot Marco Baghdatis 6-4, 7-5. The lone Indian left in the fray is Prakash Amritraj in doubles. Amritraj, and his South African partner Rik De Voest defeated the British duo of James Auckland and Lee Childs 6-3, 6-7 (7-3), 7-6 (7-4).
