New Delhi: National champion Abhinn Shyam Gupta reached the pre-quarter finals of the German Open badminton tournament on Thursday even as former All England champion Pullela Gopichand, Nikhil Kanetkar and Chetan Anand crashed out.
Gupta, who pulled off an upset, defeating 13th seed Roslin Hashim of Malaysia in the first round, easily outplayed his Danish opponent Kasper Oedum15-6, 15-6 to book a date with Jang Young Soo of Korea in the round of 16.
In the women’s section, national champion Aparna Popat bowed out in the pre-quarter final against second seed Gong Ruina of China 4-11, 7-11.
In other Round II matches, Gopichand was thrashed by Park Sung Hwan of Korea 15-2, 15-5, while southpaw Kanetkar went down against eighth seed Niels Christian Kaldau of Denmark 4-15, 4-15. (PTI)
