Postal staff held for role in racket
Tapan Chakraborty, a clerk at the Salkia main post office, was arrested by Central Bureau of Investigation sleuths for accepting bribes and being involved in a racket in forged certificates. According to police, Chakraborty would receive forged National Savings Certificates from a source and operate a network. Officers suspect the forged certificates are part of a consignment that had been intercepted and stolen on its way to Guwahati from Pune a few years ago.
Three killed in mishaps
Three persons died and three were seriously injured in separate accidents in Howrah on Sunday. Shivani Mondal, a 55-year-old grocer from Uluberia, was run over by a lorry at Shanpur More in the Dasnagar police station area. The driver was arrested and the vehicle impounded.
n another accident, an unidentified 35-year-old man was killed near Howrah station when a private bus hit the motorcycle he was riding. The bus then lost control and rammed into a taxi and a bicycle. Three people were injured in the mishap, including the taxi driver and the cyclist. The bus driver was arrested. In the third incident, a teenager was run over at Betaitala in Shibpur, when a private bus hit the two-wheeler he was riding.
Train bookings
Bookings for seat reservations on the Howrah-New Delhi-Janasatabdi Express will start from September 30. According to an Eastern Railway spokesperson, tickets bought for Satabdi Express will not be valid for this train, scheduled for an inaugural run on October 1. Tickets for this train will be available from all computerised booking counters of the railways.
