Euthanasia bid goes awry

Paris, Sept. 25 (Reuters): A year after President Jacques Chirac refused his plea to die, a French man left paralysed, mute and blind from an accident was in intensive care and his mother in police custody today after a euthanasia bid.

Reigniting a debate about assisted suicide in France, the mother of 22-year-old Vincent Humbert tried to fulfil her bedridden sonís wish to die by injecting barbiturates into his drip late yesterday, her lawyer Hughes Vigier said. Doctors were battling to save Humbert, at the centre since losing his sight, speech and the use of all his limbs after a car accident in 2000.
