Dhantola charges framed

Ranaghat (Nadia), Sept. 24: The additional sessions court here today framed charges against 20 persons in the loot-and-rape incident in Dhantola that shocked the state in February. The first hearing of the trial has been scheduled for December 15.

Former CPM Aranghata zonal committee secretary Subol Bagchi and his associate, former pradhan of Ainsmali gram pancahyat Saidul Karigar, were deemed to have masterminded the outrage and have been charged with criminal conspiracy and dacoity. Bagchi is on bail since March.

Eighteen persons were charged with dacoity and murder and five with the rape of seven passengers of a bus that was returning from a marriage reception at Birnagar in Ranaghat.

DSP strike call

Durgapur: Workers of the Durgapur Steel Plant said they will boycott the puja ex gratia of Rs 2,500 this year and threatened to go on strike from Friday if the management failed to increase the amount. They gheraoed executive director (works) Nilotpal Roy on Wednesday to press their demand. The Unions’ Forum, comprising Citu, Aituc and Intuc-affiliated unions of DSP workers, gave the strike call after the authorities announced the ex gratia on Tuesday.

Traffic fracas

Calcutta: Traffic in Park Street was disrupted on Wednesday night after a taxi driver was arrested for allegedly assaulting a traffic sergeant on duty. Police said an argument began between the two after the driver refused to stop. He is said to have punched the sergeant. The driver complained he lost his temper after the sergeant smashed the taxi windscreen with his helmet. He, however, denied assaulting the official.
