Penn in Spain fires patriotic missile at Bush

San Sebastian (Spain), Sept. 24 (AFP): Pronouncing himself “more patriotic than the President”, US actor Sean Penn hit town at the 51st San Sebastian International Film Festival.

Penn, who has been awarded a Donostia prize here — Donostia being the Basque name for San Sebastian — alongside Isabelle Huppert and Robert Duvall for their career contributions to the cinema, made perfectly clear he was not in sympathy with President George W. Bush’s politics, particularly on Iraq.

“I am sure I am more patriotic than the current President we have in the United States,” said Penn, who was involved in directing a series of short films to mark the September 11 attacks on his homeland.

Penn, former husband of Madonna, said being awarded a Donostia was a “true honour”. The 43-year-old from Burbank, California, comes to this Basque city having earlier this month been awarded the accolade of best actor at the Venice film festival for his role as a heart transplant patient in the hard-hitting 21 Grams.
