Troops shoot at Italy envoy’s car

Baghdad, Sept. 19 (Reuters): American troops opened fire on a car carrying an Italian diplomat who holds a senior position in Iraq’s US-led administration, killing his Iraqi interpreter, American military sources said today.

Pietro Cordone, senior adviser on culture for the US-led authority, was unhurt in yesterday’s shooting. The US sources said Cordone’s car was shot at after it repeatedly tried to overtake a US convoy near Tikrit. Soldiers warned the car not to overtake and opened fire when they thought the vehicle was trying to ram them.
