Ragging axe on nine

Haldia, Sept.19: Eighteen second and third-year students of Haldia Institute of Technology were pulled up by the college authorities today on charges of ragging, reports our correspondent.

Nine students have been suspended for a year and the rest have been fined Rs 5,000 each. All 18 have been asked to leave the hostel.

Principal S.R. Deb said the students were punished on the basis of an inquiry that found them guilty of ragging. Some senior students said the incident on the day of freshers’ welcome was a “misunderstanding” between the junior and senior students.
