3 held for transfer racket

Calcutta, Sept. 17: Three persons suspected to be linked to a cash-for-forged transfer order racket were arrested today. Deputy inspector-general (administration) D.P. Tarenia, who is inquiring into the racket, said one of the arrested is a homeguard from Birbhum while the other two are from among the 19 constables who took transfers to their home districts with the forged orders. Tarenia said the other constables have been identified and suspended.

“We found that not only my signature, but also that of my predecessor were forged,” said Tarenia. The CID is expected to take over the investigation.

Naxalite protest

Midnapore: All 27 Naxalites on a hungerstrike for the past week in Midnapore jail to protest against their “illegal detention” have been shifted to the jail hospital following deterioration of their condition. Jail superintendent Panchanan Biswas claimed six of them have called off the protest.

Farmer shot

Krishnagar (Nadia): BSF jawans shot a farmer for allegedly trying to cross over with cattle to Bangladesh near Mahakhola, around 110 km from Calcutta.

Insect in syrup

Calcutta: A person lodged a complaint with the police at Liluah in Howrah after finding a live insect in a sealed bottle of cough syrup manufactured by a renowned firm.
