Rathore bags Olympic berth

New Delhi: Major Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore won a bronze in the double trap event at the World Shooting Championships in Nicosia on Tuesday, thereby clinching a quota place for next year’s Olympics in Athens.

Rathore shot 141 in the preliminary round and a 48 in the final to tally 189 overall.

He thus became the third Indian shooter to gain an Olympic berth after Anjali Vedpathak Bhagwat and Abhinav Bindra.

The double trap gold in Nicosia was won by Allen Walter who shot 192 while Mark Russel of Australia bagged silver with a score of 191.

IOA trip to Pakistan

A seven-member Indian Olympic Association delegation, led by president Suresh Kalmadi, will leave for Pakistan on Wednesday to attend an Extraordinary Executive Council Meeting of the South Asian Sports Federation at Lahore.

Topping the agenda at the meeting slated for Thursday will be the hosting of the thrice-postponed ninth SAF games and the dates for the 2004 edition.

The Indian delegation will also seek support for India’s bid to host the 2010 Commonwealth Games. (PTI)
