Probe into Cachar clashes

The Cachar district magistrate on Tuesday ordered a magisterial probe into the circumstances which led to a fracas between the students of the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Ghoongoor, and villagers. olice sources said the two groups were engaged in a series of clashes over two days. Nearly 30 people were injured in the clashes, which occurred after some students of the institute went to a nearby village to investigate a theft in the computer laboratory.

Police rapped

The All Adivasi Students’ Association of Assam has condemned the firing by the ninth Assam Police Battalion at the Sungajan border outpost, which led to the death of Jibon Bora. The association has demanded a high-level judicial inquiry into the incident.

Health camp

Altogether 500 people were treated free of cost at a medical camp organised by the Subansiri lower project of the National Hydrolectric Power Corporation at Halakhbari Village in Dhemaji district.

Clerks on strike

The Mizoram Subordinate Ministerial Service Association’s upper-division clerk and lower-division clerk joint action committee has called a strike from Tuesday in protest against the state government’s alleged failure to meet its demands within the deadline.

Koch memo

The All Assam Koch Rajbongshi Students’ Union has submitted a memorandum to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, demanding the creation of a separate Kamtapur state. The students claimed that the Koch Rajbongshis of the Northeast had a sovereign and independent kingdom, Kamata state, till the signing of the Yandabu Pact in 1826.

Meet on exports

The 51st All India Export Advisory Committee, which met in Guwahati on Tuesday, has appealed for for simplification of trade procedures to improve export from the Northeast. Representatives of several trade bodies and export promotion organisations attended the meeting.

Help for disabled

The National Programme for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disabilities has set up resource centres in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Assam. The programme was launched with the objective of providing comprehensive rehabilitation services to persons with disabilities, especially those living in the rural areas.
