Bacteria in city water

Calcutta, Sept. 16: A week after Calcutta Municipal Corporation submitted a report to the high court certifying the quality of drinking water in the city, the public heath department filed a report in the court saying the water was unfit for consumption and it contained bacteria.

Chief engineer of the department Pradip De said they had collected samples from 24 places in the city. The water was contaminated at a dozen places.The report said the drinking water at the CMC headquarters on S.. Banerjee Road and in the high court was also contaminated.

The CMC had said it had no authority to check underground reservoirs in public places.
