Boy drowns in Maidan pond

Mohammad Imran, 10, drowned in the Manohar Das Tarag, adjacent to the Maidan, on Sunday afternoon. Maidan police said Imran, a resident of Bedford Lane in the Park Street area, was playing with his friends near the pond when he went missing. Imranís cries for help alerted his friends who noticed him drowning in the pool, but could not save him. The boy was pronounced dead at SSKM Hospital.

Youth run over by truck

A 27-year-old unidentified youth was run over by a truck at Barasat on Sunday. Local residents put up a roadblock demanding traffic police in the area.

Traffic mess

Airport-bound traffic on VIP Road was disrupted for an hour on Sunday morning after Citu-led private bus operators on route 44 put up a roadblock alleging police harassment.

Leaderís bag stolen

CPM leader and All India Democratic Womenís Association president Suhasini Aliís handbag was stolen from the University Institute Hall, in the College Street area, where she was attending the golden jubilee celebrations of Paschim Banga Ganatantrik Mahila Samity on Sunday.

Car smuggle arrest

Howrah police arrested Swapan Dasgupta and Rabiul on Saturday night for their involvement in an inter-state car smuggling racket. The two were produced in court on Sunday and remanded in police custody for eight days.

Cablemen protest

A section of cable operators is expected to hold an agitation in front of the offices of STAR India Pvt Ltd and RPG Netcom on Monday, to protest the MSOís exclusive distribution rights of STAR channels.
