Bus collision leaves 13 injured

Traffic was disrupted at Sukantanagar, near the airport, on Friday morning following an accident in which 13 bus passengers were injured.

According to North 24-Parganas police, the mishap occurred around 9.30 am when two private buses — one bound for Barasat, and the other for Basirhat — collided while trying to overtake one another. The drivers and conductors of the two buses fled the accident site on Jessore Road.

All injured passengers were taken to RG Kar Medical College and Hospital where some of them were stated to be in critical condition.

Immediately after the accident, local residents put up a roadblock bringing traffic to a standstill. “We have been repeatedly asking the local municipality and the public works department (PWD) to repair this stretch of road. The condition is such that an accident is just waiting to happen,” alleged Atul Ghosh, a local resident.

Later, district superintendent of police Basudeb Bag admitted that the condition of Jessore Road in the area was “really dangerous”.

“I shall raise the matter with PWD and highway officials to ensure repair of the road before Durga Puja,” assured Bag.
