Rape cloud on CPM leader

Burdwan, Sept. 12: The court here today asked the district superintendent of police to investigate the allegation of rape against a top CPM leader.

Minati Maity, a resident of Kamargaria village in the Madhabdihi police station area, about 150 km from Calcutta, had said Basudeb Sarkar raped her on the night of September 2. She had also alleged that police refused to accept her complaint because of Sarkar’s clout in the CPM-led zilla parishad.

The chief judicial magistrate asked the police chief not to let Madhabdihi police station handle the case. “We have not received any complaint from her till date,” said Sandip Sarkhel, the officer in charge of Madhabdihi.

Woman burnt to death

Jahanur Bibi, 27, was tied up and torched to death by her neighbours this afternoon on her way to the police station to lodge a complaint against them.

Residents of Rangamatia in West Midnapore, about 200 km from Calcutta, had allegedly beaten up Jahanur’s daughter yesterday, accusing her of damaging their vegetables. Five persons, including four women, were arrested after Jahanur succumbed to injuries at Chandrakona block primary health centre, where she had been admitted.
