Govt sanctions Rs 1.79 lakh more for Anju

New Delhi: The Centre has sanctioned Rs 1.79 lakh to world championship bronze-medallist Anju Bobby George as an additional assistance from the Prime Ministerís National Sports Development Fund, the sports ministry announced on Tuesday.

The grant follows request from the world No. 6 long-jumper for assistance to take part in the Monaco meet on September 13 and 14. The sports ministry had in April given Anju Rs 12 lakh for her training in US under Mike Powell. The legendary American long-jumper feels the Indian has it in her to strike gold in next yearís Athens Olympics.

Anju, who bagged bronze in the Manchester Commonwealth Games and gold in Busan Asian Games last year, fetched India their first-ever world athletics championships medal from the Paris meet nine days ago with an effort of 6.70m. (PTI)
