‘Murder’ after night at in-laws’

Behrampore, Sept. 8: Sanhada Bibi, a 19-year-old housewife, was murdered last night at her parents’ house in Sagardighi, about 200 km from Calcutta.

Police said her husband Naseeruddin Sheikh and his parents are absconding.

Last night, Sheikh had gone to his in-laws’ place, where Sanhada was staying with her 25-day-old daughter. Early this morning, her parents found the child alone in the room. “Sanhada’s body was found in a neighbour’s garden. The husband was missing,” said Gyanwanth Singh, the Murshidabad superintendent of police. A murder case has been registered against Sheikh.

Sheikh and Sanhada were in love but when she conceived, he refused to marry. Her father approached the village elders. “Sheikh and his family members were reluctant to accept her but gave in under pressure. Trouble began when Sanhada gave birth to a daughter,” said the police.
