Calcutta, Sept. 6:Shivika Burman captured a ‘double’ in the Calcutta leg of the Nike Junior Tour at BTA Complex Saturday.
The local girl toppled top seed Varsha Datta of Assam 6-2, 6-3 in the girls’ under-14 singles final. After a prolonged rain delay, Shivika teamed up with Varsha to beat Mokshada Jain and Treta Bhattacharya in the doubles final.
Shivika, who has improved quite a few notches after a two-month training stint in Tampa (Florida) recently, impressed one and all with her strong all-court game against Varsha.
The rain-hit final day threw up another local winner when fourth seed Danielle Jones upset top seed Ridhima 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 in the girls’ under-12 final.
The boys’ crowns went to participants from Tamil Nadu. Second seed G.P. Prajnesh fought gallantly to upstage top seed and statemate Navneeth Kannan 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 in the under-14 category. In the under-12 final, M.A. Navin dismissed Maharashtra’s Siddhartha Gulgule 6-0, 6-3.
Come Monday, the BTA complex will again be throbbing with activity as the fourth leg of the Nutrine Naturo sub-junior Tour gets going. With outstation entries overflowing, the organisers have decided to hold an unprecedented pre-qualifying round to give everyone a fair shot at making the main draw of 32.
With rain in the air and the new AITA rule of conducting the five-round main draw over four days (Wednesday to Saturday), it won’t be an easy job completing the tournament on time.
If required, some matches will be played at the ITA complex in SAI.
