Navin, Gulgule in under-12 final

Tamil Nadu’s M. A. Navin set up a title-clash with Maharashtra’s Siddhartha Gulgule in the boys’ under-12 event of the AITA Nike junior tour, Calcutta leg, at the Bengal Tennis Association tennis complex on Friday.

Navin beat statemate U.M. Gugan Verma 6-4, 0-6, 6-4, while Gulgule beat Ghaziabad’s Chandril Sood 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

In the boys’ u-14, Navneetha Kannan of Tamil nadu beat Akshay Ashok of Kerala 3-7, 6-2, 6-4 and G.P. Prajnesh (also TN) beat statemate V. Sudarshan 6-1, 6-2. Arijit Goswami of Maharashtra beat Chattisgarh’s Abhijit Tiwari 6-3,7-6 (7-5), and Jacob Tariq of Tamil Nadu beat local boy Rohit Kumar 6-1, 6-2.

B. Navneetha Kannan became the first Under 14 boy to reach the final by defeating Tariq Jacob 6-1, 6-0 before rain interrupted play.

In other matches, Treta Bhattacharya beat Mokshada Jain 3-6, 7-6 (13-11), 7-5 in the girls’ under-12 section, while Likitha Devaraj beat Susita 6-4, 6-4.

BBYS win

BBYS pipped Barisha 56-54 in their state senior basketball league match at the Chhatra Samity court Friday. V. Agarwal scored 22 points for the winners.

Special meet

The India Braille Chess Association will organise the national schools chess championship for the visually challenged at the Bharat Sevasharm Sangha, Garia, from Saturday to Tuesday. Around 100 from various parts of the country will take part.
