Indians off to a winning start

Hyderabad: Indian colts won their opening group encounters in the ninth Asian junior table tennis meet on Tuesday.

The boys’ team, comprising Sourav Chakraborty, Arunava Ganguly and Subhadeep Das, blanked United Arab Emirates 3-0 while the girls had a similar scoreline against Indonesia.

Ahmed Faisal Ahmed made Sourav toil for his 11-7, 9-11, 15-13, 13-11 victory. But Arunava made short work of Omar Rasheed Abdul Hamid 11-6, 12-10, 11-8. Subhadeep won 11-8, 11-8, 11-5 against Hasan Rasheed Mohammed to complete the rout.

The girls faced a bit of a challenge but were good enough to see off Indonesia. Sushmita Roy fought back to beat Silir Rovani 9-11, 11-5, 11-4, 11-9. Nandita Saha thrashed Yayak W. Radjeki 11-8, 12-10, 11-4 and Moushumi Paul beat 8-11, 17-15, 12-14, 11-8, 11-4 win against Riki Soyahrani. (PTI)
