Saptarshi Roy clinches title

Chennai: Saptarshi Roy of the Goodricke National Chess Academy and R. Priya of Tamil Nadu won the boys and girls titles in the 13th national under-18 chess championship here on Tuesday.

Saptarshi, 7.5, was tied at the top with Abhishek Das of Jharkhand, but the Calcutta boy clinched the title, courtesy a better progressive score.

IM Deepan Chakravarthy got the third spot. Saptarshi, who won The Telegraph Schools’ Chess in 1999 and 2000, was richer by Rs 9,500, while Priya bagged Rs 6,000. Both will represent India in the world chess meet in Greece.

Priya, 7.5, was a half a point clear of S. Nabeela Farheen and Sowmuya Swaminathan of Maharashtra, who finished second and third respectively.

The ninth and final round saw former national under-16 champion Saptarshi carving out a victory against world under-12 champion Deep Sengupta.
