September 1 - 3 at Gorky Sadan & Max Mueller Bhavan: Max Mueller Bhavan Goethe-Institut, Calcutta, hosts a three-day festival of ‘Early German Silent Films’ featuring a retrospective of Richard Oswald’s works. The line-up: (Today at 6 pm): Introductory lecture by film historian Dr Jurgen Kasten on Economy and Aesthetics of Early German Cinema — Richard Oswald followed by the screening of Tales of Hoffmann; (Sept. 2 at 6 pm): Introductory lecture by Dr Jurgen Kasten followed by the screening of Different from the Others and Dida Ibsens Story; (Sept. 3 at Max Mueller Bhavan; 6.30 pm): Screening of Tales of the Uncanny with live music by renowned Jazz musician Michael Riessler.

September 2 at Uttam Mancha; 5.30 pm: To celebrate the 77th birth anniversary of superstar Uttam Kumar, Mahanayak Uttam Mancha hosts a solo painting exhibition by Ranjay Roy Chowdhury depicting myriad moods of the actor. September 3 at Uttam Udyan (close to Howrah Station); 10 am: On the occasion of Uttam Kumar’s 77th birth anniversary, his statue will be garlanded by a host of dignitaries including Biplab Chattopadhyay, Nimu Bhowmick and Papiya Adhikari.
