Trade with China on the rise

Calcutta, Aug. 30: Trade between India and China, according to Chinese statistics, for the period January-December 2002 reached $4.94 billion, an increase of 37.50 per cent over the same period of 2001.

The statistics, made available by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, said while Chinese exports to India during the period increased by 40.80 per cent, Indian exports to China increased by 33.70 per cent during the period.

In 2002, exports of plastics (57 per cent), iron and steel (31 per cent), organic chemicals (67 per cent) and minerals (14 per cent) from India registered significant increase. Other items that showed high growth rates were electrical machinery, inorganic chemicals and paper.
