State sports minister Subhas Chakraborty promised the Bengal Hockey Association (BHA) on Friday the city will get an astroturf in a year’s time. Chakraborty was speaking at BHA’s annual prize distribution function which is held every year on August 29 to mark the birthday of hockey wizard Dhyanchand.
Calcutta Customs’ Satwinder Singh, who was also the highest scorer, was adjudged best player of the local league. BHA first division group A champions Customs received Rs 15,000. The Fairplay Trophy was shared by West Bengal Police and Howrah Union.
Saurav Ghoshal will clash with Gaurav Nandrajog in the under-19 final of the East India junior squash meet. In Friday’s semis, Ghoshal dismissed Naresh Kumar 9-0, 9-1, 9-0 while Nandrajog overcame Sandeep Jhangra 9-4, 7-9, 9-1, 9-3. Ramit Tandon qualified for finals of both under-13 and under-15 boys’ events. The girls’ under-19 final will feature Philip sisters Shivani and Sonali, while Mumbai lads Mahesh Mangaonkar and Abhishek Pradhan will contest the under-11 boys’ final.
The quarter-final line-up at the third Merchants’ Cup bowling championship was identified on Friday. The teams to have made the last eight of the Main Plate are Wockhardt Medical B, Bayview Technology A, Hongkong & Shanghai Bank E, Prudential ICICI AMC, Golden Steel Corporation, Waa Rubber Industries, IAL Shipping Agencies and Computech International.
